Recently, Rs. Bipinbhai Hadwani, Founder Of Rajkot-Gujarat Salt Making Company Gopal Snacks Pvt Ltd, Who Tops The List Of Richest People With Assets Of Over Rs 1,000 Crore, Considers Only The Women Working In His Company As His Daughters. Today, Gopal Has Become A Well-Known Brand In Gujarat And 8 Other States Of The Country As A Brand Of Salt. Bipinbhai Started This By Borrowing In 1994 And Today The Value Of This Brand Is Rs. 3000 Crore. Bipinbhai, Who Hails From Bhadra, A Small Village In Saurashtra With Only 11 Standard Passes, Described His Journey In A Telephonic Conversation With Divya Bhaskar. When Divyabhaskar Called Him, He Was Lying In Bed At His New Plant In Modasa.

Your Name Has Been Included In The List Of Richest People Of Gujarat. How Do You Feel About This?

Bipinbhai: You Seem To Be Doing Something Wrong. My Wife Daksha's Name Is Not Mine. A Few Days Ago, I Read That My Wife's Name Was Among The Richest Women In Gujarat. I Found Out Today That My Name Has Also Come Up.

Why Didn't You Come Up With The Idea Of   Studying Further?

I Failed In 12th Standard So I Didn't Think Of Studying Further. It Was At That Time That The Village Was Our Shop And We Used To Go Straight To Work From School. We Would Get Up Early In The Morning And Go To Jetpur To Study And In The Afternoon We Would Go To Work At Our Grocery Store. In Such A Situation, There Is Not Much Time To Study.

What Is Your Hobby

I Like To Travel Every Year I Go To India Or Abroad With My Wife Daksha And Family. Has Toured 7 Countries So Far. I Can't Go Anywhere Right Now Because Of Corona But I Come Back To My Plants To Fulfill My Hobbies. Also I Like To Jam People. My Father Started Raising Children In Our Village On Makarsankranti In 1980. Even Today We Have Maintained This Tradition. I Like To Be With People And That Is Why I Spend More Time With My Factory Workers, Eat With Them And Talk About Their Joys And Sorrows. I Believe That God Has Given Me Intelligence And Money So I Should Work For Others.

Stay In Touch With Old Friends In The Village Even Today?

I Go To The Village Every Two Months. There Are My Friends, Meet Them Invariably. Even If I Have More Money Than Him Today, It Doesn't Make Any Difference To My Friendship. All This Has Become Like Krishna Sudama. He Doesn't Have To Ask, We Have To Understand In Our Own Way. I Know That If They Need Help, I Do Not Know How To Do It. The Money Came Today, But They Are All My Childhood Friends.

What Kind Of Relationship Do You Have With Your Staff, Since Most Of Your Workers Are Women?

We Currently Have About 3000 Production Staff, Of Which About 1500 Are Girls. My Wife Daksha Stays With Him Constantly And Our Efforts Are Such That The Girls Take Care Not To Miss Even Her Mom. We Don't Have Daughters So These Girls Are Our Daughters. We Treat Them Like Daughters And I Love My Wife. We Give Kariyavar Bonus To Every Virgin Girl Who Works With Us. Every Year He Gets Rs. Giving 25000. He Has Also Built A Hostel To Live In. In An Emergency Like Corona, They Are Provided With Facilities Including Accommodation And Meals So That They Do Not Have Any Problem And Also Have No Difficulty In Coming And Going And Daksha Manages It Completely.

How Did You Get Into The Salt Business?

Farsana Was Also Sold At Our Shop In Bhadra. My Father Taught Me How To Make Farsan And He Used To Make Salt For My Elder Brother Mahendrabhai. Big Brother Taught Me And Prafulbhai To Make Different Snacks. I've Been Doing All This Since I Was 13, So I Came Up With The Idea. In The Beginning, They Used To Make And Sell Chewing Gum In The Village Without Any Name And Then In The Surrounding Area. Trade In The Village Is Limited So I Decided To Come To Rajkot.

How Did It Start In Rajkot And How Did It Move Forward?

I Started The Business With My Cousin In 1990. At That Time We Both Brothers Had A Partnership Of Rs. 8500 And Started Selling Chewing Gum Under The Name Of Gokul. I Later Handed Over The Brand To Him And Made A Fresh Start In 1994 At Our Home In Rajnagar, Rajkot. I Had Nothing Then. Borrowed Oil And Gram Flour And Thus Started Gopal Namkeen At Home. Our Different Types Of Arthritis Cost People Even More Today. As The Business Grew, So Did The Machinery And At The Same Time Took Up Space And Built Semi-Automatic And Automatic Plants.

What Kind Of Support Has Been Received From The Wife In Developing The Business?

Daksha And I Were Married In 1993 Before The Launch Of The Gopal Brand. Since Then She Has Always Been With Me And Is Still Active Today (Dakshaben Is The Third Richest Woman In Gujarat). At Every Stage She Is Standing By My Side. Among Other Family Members, Elder Brother Prafulbhai Has Also Been Associated With The Company For A Long Time. My Son Raj Has Also Been Carrying Out Many Responsibilities For The Last Two Years.

If There Were Many Other Brands In The Market At The Time Of The Launch, What Was The Strategy For Moving Forward?

Our Father Taught That If You Make Anything, You Should Make It The Way You Make It At Home, Not For Sale. Never Use Light Goods And Never Think Of Profit. We Have Focused More On Backward Integration To Move The Business Forward. Other Companies Rely On Outsiders For Sales, Marketing, Logistics As Well As Machinery, But We Make The Machines For Production, Marketing, Production Ourselves. Transport Is Also Our Own. We Buy Raw Material Directly From The Market As Well As From Farmers. All Of This Adds Up To 75% To Our Costs.

What Level Does The Company Want To Reach Now?

Gopal Plans To Have A Factory Every 500 Km In India. We Want To Build 5 Big Plants In Different Parts Of The Country. At Present There Are Plants In Rajkot As Well As Nagpur. In Addition, Large Plants Are To Be Set Up Around Delhi, Kolkata And Bengaluru. In Addition 20 Small Plants Are To Be Built To Save Logistical Time. We Will Complete This Entire Project In The Next 10 Years At An Estimated Cost Of Rs. Will Invest More Than Rs 1000 Crore. One Of Our Wafer Plants Is Being Built In Modasa, Which Will Start In A Month. Here We Are Building Gujarat's Largest Cold Storage Of 35000 Tons. At Present Our Turnover Is Rs. 1000 Crore And In The Next Five-Seven Years It Will Be Increased To Rs. 5000 Crore.
